PBS is a biodegradable plastic designed to decompose into water and carbon dioxide by microbial activity. Mitsubishi Chemical stated it determined that long-term period sustainable development within the business could be challenging under present market conditions.

The declaration follows numerous current restructuring moves by Mitsubishi Chemical Group. Earlier this year, the company introduced plans to withdraw from its coke and carbon materials business on the Kagawa Plant in Japan, mentioning oversupply and weak global demand situations, mainly in China and Southeast Asia. As per the company, ethylene manufacturing can be consolidated at the Osaka Petrochemical Industries facility by fiscal year 2030.
