Haldia Petrochemicals is planning to inaugurate a ₹6,000 crore phenol and acetone complex in Haldia in October. The project, housed under Adplus Polymers & Chemicals, is remarkable for along with India’s first on-purpose propylene unit based on olefin conversion technology and the nation’s largest phenol plant. The release could reinforce domestic chemicals capacity and reinforce Haldia’s role as a production hub.

West Bengal is planning for a significant addition to its industrial map as Haldia Petrochemicals readies a ₹6,000 crore chemicals venture in Haldia. The plant, planned for inauguration in October, is anticipated to strengthen the state’s petrochemicals base while also bringing latest domestic capacity into a segment that has long relied on imports and a limited supplier pool.

A strategic bet on downstream chemicals

The upcoming unit is being placed as more than a standard expansion. Built under Adplus Polymers & Chemicals, a subsidiary of Haldia Petrochemicals, the venture is formed to manufacture phenol and acetone at a scale that could alter supply dynamics in India’s industrial chemicals market. Phenol is broadly used in resins, laminates, adhesives and pharmaceuticals, even as acetone feeds solvents, coatings and numerous downstream production chains.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Sunday that he would inaugurate the facility on October 14, as per the state government briefing from Nabanna. The declaration places the venture on a firm public timetable after years of construction and planning, and underscores how the plant has become a visible marker of industrial activity in Haldia.

First on-purpose propylene unit of its kind

What makes the venture particularly significant is the propylene manufacturing line attached to it. The facility is set to house India’s first on-purpose propylene plant using olefin conversion technology, along with what’s explained as the country’s of largest phenol production unit. In practical terms, that means the complex isn’t just processing feedstock, however also forms a crucial intermediate on-site, that can improve incorporation and efficiency for the broader plant.

For India’s chemicals sector, such incorporation capacity matters. A domestic chain can support decrease exposure to global rate swings and logistics bottlenecks, while also assisting local production in paints, plastics, pharmaceuticals and consumer products. The scale of the investment suggests that Haldia Petrochemicals is targeting to occupy a more central position in that value chain.

Leadership has been monitoring the final stretch

Project oversight has moved into its last phase. Purnendu Chatterjee, chairperson of Haldia Petrochemicals, visited the site in February to review construction progress, followed by whole-time director and chief executive officer Navanit Narayan and senior venture officers. That visit indicated that the plant was approaching completion and that the target had shifted from civil work to commissioning readiness and operational preparation.

The venture also carries importance for Haldia itself, a location that has long been associated with heavy industry and port-connected logistics. Large chemical units in the area can help ancillary businesses, transport activity and specialized services, whilst also strengthening eastern India’s role in the country’s industrial geography. For West Bengal, the opening provides a chance to showcase a massive-scale private investment at a time when states are competing aggressively for production ventures.

Why the release matters beyond one plant

The October inauguration will be watched not only as a corporate milestone, but also as a indicate for the wider chemicals cycle. India has been pushing to construct domestic production across inputs that were earlier sourced from overseas or from a narrow set of plants. A venture of this size can assist narrow those gaps, offered the commissioning phase proceeds smoothly and market demand holds up.

There is likewise a policy dimension. Large downstream ventures consisting of this one frequently rely on a mix of infrastructure, feedstock security and predictable regulation. Their success can have an effect on whether more capital follows into the sector, particularly in states that can provide land, port access and industrial ecosystems. If the Haldia complex stabilises quickly after release, it could become a reference point for future investments in specialty and commodity chemicals alike.

For now, the focus is on October 14, when the plant is anticipated to move from construction site to operating asset. For Haldia Petrochemicals, the release would mark a major capacity addition. For West Bengal, it would add another large industrial headline to a region that also sees production as a key route to jobs, exports and long-term growth.
