India beats China for second consecutive year in biofuel consumption

India pipped China as the world’s fourth largest biofuel customer for the second consecutive year by 2024.

However, it nonetheless trails China in terms of manufacturing of the green fuel. As in per the ‘Statistical Review of World Energy 2025’, produced by The Energy Institute (EI), in collaboration with Kearney and KPMG, India’s biofuel consumption increased by 40% in year on-year (y-o-y) to 77 thousand barrels of oil equal in keeping with day (kbbloe/d) in 2024.

Biofuel intake has extended at a 31.8% increase price according to annum among 2014 and 2024 in the world’s third largest energy consumers, it introduced. On the alternative hand, China’s biofuel consumption increased by around 18% y-o-y to 60 kbbloe/d. The nation of a typically exports biodiesel to Europe and bunkering hubs in Asia.

Biofuels encompass ethanol, biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuels.

The review pointed out that worldwide requirement for biofuels increased by 3% y-o-y in 2024 to reach a record level of 2.2-million barrels of oil equivalent per day (Mbbloe/d) with Asia Pacific region India (77-kbbloe/d) (60-kbbloe/d).

The overview mentioned that US leads in intake at 856-kbbloe/d, followed by Brazil (434 kbbloe/d), Indonesia (181-kbbloe/d), India (77-kbbloe/d) and China (60-kbbloe/d).

India’s biofuel production increased by means of 27% y-o-y to 70-kbbloe/d in 2024. Biofuel manufacturing has extended at a 30.4% growth rate per annum between 2014 and 2024, it added. In evaluation, China’s biofuel manufacturing increased by almost 31% y-o-y to 106-kbbloe/d. The production behemoth’s output has grown at a rate of 8.4% within the last decade ending 2024.

Global biofuels manufacturing grew via over 8%, with US the biggest worldwide producer with a 37% share of global production. Also, US, Brazil and Europe blended account for around 75% of worldwide biofuels use.
