Initial plan to capture 2,000 tons of CO2 annually at the pilot plant positioned at Taipower’s Taichung Power Plant Carbon Reduction Technology Park

BASF has signed a license agreement with Carbon Cap Applications Technology Co. (CCAT) to give its OASE blue gas treatment technology for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) venture at the Taichung Power Plant Carbon Reduction Technology Park, operated by way of Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), Taiwan’s biggest electricity provider.

This collaboration combines CCAT’s advanced technology and engineering solutions with BASF’s validated OASE® blue carbon capture technology. The venture, which was awarded and started up at the end of 2023, is anticipated to capture 2,000 tons of CO2 annually, in step with Taipower’s design and planning requirements. If successful, Taipower will check the feasibility of growing a new demonstration plant for industrial operation, with the subsequent phase aiming to capture a million tons of CO2 per year. The CO2 captured inside the modern-day phase may be sequestered on the Taichung Power Plant, while the opportunity of sequestration in Taiwan’s offshore strata could be evaluated in the subsequent phase.

Daniel Yao, Managing Director, CCAT, stated, “In the context of the modern environmental and energy transition, CCAT deeply understands the importance of promoting sustainable innovation and lowering carbon emissions. We are honored to adopt Taiwan’s first carbon capture industrial demonstration venture and collaborate with BASF, using its improved OASE blue technology. This partnership objectives to improve the technical level and outcomes of environmental safety ventures. It will in addition drive the growth of both parties in the green energy sector, even as additionally providing Taipower with more efficient solutions to promote clean emissions in the energy production process.”

“This venture will function as another exciting reference plant for us, showcasing how BASF’s OASE blue carbon capture technology permits our customers, which includes Taipower, to obtain their CCS targets, with a purpose to in turn boost up the transition to a more sustainable energy industry,” introduced Lawrence Loe, Director, OASE Gas Treating Excellence, Intermediates Asia Pacific, BASF.
