Nobian, a European salt-based chemicals supplier, has currently evolved and patented a sustainable process that converts lithium chloride into lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) – a main raw material for lithium-ion batteries. Using electrolysis and crystallization, lithium chloride is transformed into LHM.

Veolia, a leader in water remedy technologies and lithium compounds manufacturing, has confirmed the process’ efficiency and applicability via strict testing, using its HPD crystallization technology at its Research, Development and guiding facility in Plainfield, Illinois (USA).

The cooperation between Nobian and Veolia goals to mix the expertise from both corporations to further scale lithium manufacturing, contributing to Europe’s strategic independence in lithium deliver. Both corporations will explore the blending of Nobian’s new lithium conversion procedures into Veolia’s HPD technology, generating a commercially attainable joint proposition. Following the testing phase, Nobian and Veolia will are searching for strategic partners throughout the value chain, enticing lithium chloride suppliers, technology supplier, customers, investors, and potential licensees during Europe and globally.

By making use of existing chlor-alkali infrastructure inside the Netherlands and Germany, Nobian’s new developed method improves efficiency whilst decreasing investment and operating expenses. Veolia, with over 1,000 evaporation and crystallization installations across more than 30 countries, brings deep expertise in lithium-associated technologies. Coert van Lare, Director Innovation Program Renewable and Circular at Nobian, commented, “This collaboration with Veolia strengthens the European battery value chain and contributes to the most reliable use of critical raw materials. Additionally, we’re geared up to license our technology globally.”

Mark Boone, Executive Vice President for evaporation and crystallization technologies at Veolia, stated, “With our validated track record in scaling up, supplying and making sure specific integrated crystallization systems for excessive purity products in the chlor-alkali and battery material industries, Veolia is ideally located for this venture. We are excited to partner with Nobian, contributing our comprehensive expertis to commercialize their lithium conversion technology at the same time as advancing Europe’s important minerals security and using ahead the decarbonization of transportation.”
