This agreement follows the European Commission’s inclusion of Greenland Resources’ Malmbjerg venture as a concern in its RESourceEU programme. The MoU outlines a plan for a supply agreement regarding ferro-molybdenum, molybdenum-oxide, and briquettes made from molybdenum ore mined in Greenland by the corporation, in an effort to be refined in Belgium. Anticipated to be operational within the decade, the Malmbjerg mine will produce 32.8-million kilos of molybdenum yearly.

GMH is a pioneer in sustainable steel manufacturing using of electric arc furnaces based on scrap recycling thus forming 80% fewer CO2 emissions than conventionally produced steel. It operates extra than 15 manufacturing sites, in general in Germany.

Europe’s ability to supply green steel, in mainly high-strength and corrosion-resistant grades, relies on securing alloying factors such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum, with molybdenum playing a crucial position in strength and corrosion resistance. The EU is the second largest consumers of molybdenum globally however lacks extraction capabilities. Germany is the EU’s largest user and has labeled molybdenum as a high-risk material on its Criticality List. Similarly, Canada recognizes molybdenum as considerable in its important minerals listing.

Earlier in February, Greenland Resources and Europe’s largest stainless steel producer Outokumpu signed a 10-year, $1.6-bn molybdenum offtake deal from the Malmbjerg venture.

Primary molybdenum is only produced in China (87%) and America (13%), China imposed export controls on molybdenum and is now a net importer. Molybdenum is categorized as a vital and/or strategic mineral throughout the top 5-defence countries within the global: US, China, Russia, India, and South Korea.
