Air Products, the world’s main distributer of hydrogen, declared it has effectively completed the primary fill of the world’s largest hydrogen sphere at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Kennedy Space Center located on Merritt Island, Florida. NASA utilize liquid hydrogen mixed with liquid oxygen as fuel in cryogenic rocket engines.

To Finish the fill, Air Products supplied over 50 trailer loads of liquid hydrogen – about 730,000 gallons in all – to NASA’s new sphere. The NASA hydrogen sphere is the world’s largest liquid hydrogen tank, measuring 90 ft tall and 83 ft in diameter. The hydrogen could be used to fuel NASA’s Artemis missions, which goals to return humans to the Moon for the primary time since the Apollo era and establish the first long-time period presence on the Moon.

“Air Products has a long history dating back into the 1950s of operating with NASA, and extension from well before the successful Apollo 11 moon landing to more current missions to study Mars,” stated Francesco Maione, Air Products’ President, Americas. “This hydrogen fill, that is Air Products’ largest ever for NASA, efficiently demonstrates our ability to deliver world-scale tiers of commercial gases appropriately and reliably by our strong supply chain, so NASA can confidently persist its essential work for future missions to the Moon and beyond.”
