German technology provider, Thyssenkrupp Uhde, stated it has been decided by CSBP – a chemicals and fertilisers business that forms part of Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy & Fertilisers (WesCEF) – to supply its patented EnviNOx technology for two nitric acid plants at CSBP’s Kwinana site in Western Australia.

This follows the delivery of the EnviNOx technology in CSBP’s ‘Nitric Acid Ammonium Nitrate 3’ (NAAN3) plant in 2025.

With the recent contract, Thyssen- krupp Uhde will combine all three of CSBP’s nitric acid manufacturing facilities – NAAN1, NAAN2 and NAAN3 – with the EnviNOx technology for NOx and nitrous oxide (N2 O) emission reduction with Thyssenkrupp Uhde’s EnviNOx catalyst produced by Thys senkrupp Uhde’s partner BASF.

The EnviNOx system marks a big milestone for industrial emissions reduction, with the system now putting off more than 98% of all N2 O emissions from CSBP’s NAAN3 plant that corresponds to N2 O outlet concentrations beneath 1 ppmv (parts per million by volume). N2 O is a fairly robust greenhouse gas with a global warming capacity more than 270 times greater than carbon dioxide, making its reduction vital to reaching meaningful climate impact.

Why green chemicals are moving from niche to industrial scale

Reducing more than 60,000 tons of CO2-equal emissions per year, the projects in CSBP’s NAAN1 and NAAN2 plant will considerably make contributions to delivering WesCEF’s target to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% 2030 from a 2020 baseline, and assist on its journey to net zero. With the finishing of the new abatement systems, Thyssenkrupp Uhde will help the decarbonization of agricultural and mining sectors, providing low-emissions products while supporting climate goals.

WesCEF Chief Operating Officer Mr. Leigh Meyers, commented, “The successful commissioning of abatement technology in NAAN3 has materially decreased nitrous oxide emissions at the plant. Extending this technology throughout our remaining nitric acid centers will similarly boost up progress towards our 2030 emissions reduction goal.”
