Project to Support the U.K.’s Hydrogen Infrastructure and Clean Energy Objectives

Jacobs has been chosen by Cadent Gas, on behalf of Capital Hydrogen, to oversee the Pre-Front End Engineering Design (Pre-FEED) phase for the East London Hydrogen Pipeline (ELHP) project. The 90-kilometer pipeline will run through East London, north of the River Thames, providing key industrial areas with a reliable hydrogen supply.

This initiative will play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions in sectors such as transportation and power generation, all of which are critical to both global and regional energy transitions.

With decades of experience in transforming energy generation, distribution, and usage, Jacobs will manage the Pre-FEED design, cost evaluation, strategic planning, environmental assessments, and community engagement.

The ELHP project is an integral part of Capital Hydrogen’s broader plan to transition London’s gas pipeline network to hydrogen. This project also holds the potential to create skilled jobs, boost energy independence, and offer consumers more options. Capital Hydrogen is a partnership involving Cadent, SGN, and National Grid Gas Transmission.

“Our hydrogen teams collaborate across geographies and industries, turning innovative concepts into practical solutions for a cleaner energy future,” said Jacobs Vice President James Nash. “This project builds on our long-standing relationship with Cadent and advances this critical East London decarbonization effort to benefit both the community and local industry.”

“Hydrogen is key to decarbonizing operations along the north bank of the River Thames,” added Cadent Strategy Director Angela Needle. “By ensuring a stable and reliable hydrogen supply, we’re not only supporting the transition to net-zero emissions but also helping sustain major employers, creating jobs, and driving economic growth in the region.”

Following the completion of the Pre-FEED phase, the project will move into the full FEED phase, where the final engineering designs will be developed in preparation for construction.
