Swiss speciality chemical corporation, Clariant, has signed a supply agreement with German electrified chemical processing technology startup, Sypox, to production and supply catalysts for “the world’s largest” electric powered steam methane reformer (e-SMR).

This venture combines Sypox’s electrical reformer technology with Clariant’s expertise to permit syngas manufacturing with significantly reduced CO2 emissions. Planned to start operations in 2026, the e-SMR will use 10-MW of renewable electricity to produce approximately 150 tons of syngas daily.

“We are glad to partner with Sypox to optimize and production the high-performance catalyst for the first 10-MW e-SMR plant,” stated Mr. Xaver Karsunke, Vice President Specialties at Clariant Catalysts. “Sypox technology revolutionizes the improving process and assists syngas manufacturing. This system is anticipated to be both the largest of its kind – and the first in commercial operation.”

Founded in 2021, Sypox came up from the Technical University of Munich with primary investment from the German Ministry of Economy. The corporation has produced an revolutionary solution to decarbonize chemical manufacturing via the electrification of traditional approaches, inclusive of steam methane reforming.

Conventional SMR methods depend on fossil fuel combustion outside reactor tubes, resulting in energy-intensive operations and high emissions. In assessment, Sypox reformers directly electrify the chemical conversion inside the reactor, developing a system almost two orders of magnitude more compact. This technology not only improve profitability and sustainability however also significantly simplifies plant operations. The flexible design makes Sypox technology feasible for both small, modular applications and large industrial plants.
