Sumitomo Chemical has built and began operation of a pilot facility at the Sodegaura site of its Chiba Works for its latest proprietary method to manufacture propylene directly from ethanol.

This latest technology is anticipated to absolutely make a contribution to the petrochemical industry’s to interchange to alternative feedstocks, and is supported by the NEDO Green Innovation Fund.

The corporation will boost up its demonstration venture for this method, with the goal of commercializing this procedure and licensing the technology to different corporation by the early 2030s.

Propylene is a broadly used key chemical, and presently, in Japan, it’s particular manufactured from naphtha, a fossil resource. Ethanol, however, can be Manufactured from biomass consisting of sugarcane, corn, and non-edible materials like pulp. In current years, there has also been huge development in the technology to permit the large-scale manufacturing of ethanol from explosive waste, and its industrialization is in sight. As the shift closer to sustainable crucial chemical feedstocks improves, ethanol is progressively anticipated to serve as an optional feedstock that replaces fossil resource-derived chemicals.

Sumitomo Chemical’s recently evolved method enables the direct manufacturing of propylene from ethanol. Unlike different propylene manufacturing processes the usage of ethanol, this method permit for the one-step Manufacturing of the very last product propylene without passing by intermediates such as ethylene. Because of this distinguishing characteristic, the system is predicted to decrease manufacturing costs. Moreover, it also generates hydrogen as a by-product. This is anyother benefit, because when bioethanol is used as a feedstock, it permit for the co-production of bio-derived hydrogen.

Moving ahead, Sumitomo Chemical will work to gain the numerous data important for industrialization of this process, while also accomplishing widespread advertising activities for polypropylene manufacturing from propylene acquired through this procedure. The Company aims to commercialize and license this technology by the early 2030s.
