The service life of corrugated polypropylene pipes is more than 50 years

SIBUR has developed a new grade of polypropylene PPI003 EX, characterized by means of expanded strength, for the manufacturing of corrugated pipes.

Corrugated pipes are extensively used in sewer and drainage systems. Due to the use of polypropylene within the manufacturing of such pipes, they’re light-weight, flexible and sturdy, which enables the process of laying them at a depth of several meters. The service existence of corrugated polypropylene pipes is more than 50 years.

Until lately, the requirement of Russian corrugated pipe producers was especially met by way of import deliveries. The variability of foreign currencies against the ruble, in addition to logistical restrictions, brought about a considerable rise in the price of imported raw materials, and also restricted the opportunities in their purchase. The polypropylene grade evolved of SIBUR will allow Russian producers to completely replace imported analogues within the shortest period of time and reduce the cost of buying raw materials.

The recent requirement of the domestic market is up to 36 thousand tons per year. Thanks to the development of the manufacturing of the new brand at ZapSibNeftekhim, it could be absolutely met through domestic supplies.

Vasily Mashukov, Director of Applied Development at SIBUR PolyLab, stated: “The evolution of the PPI003 EX brand was the result of focused work by the SIBUR Polylab and ZapSibneftekhim teams. We continually decided on a formula capable to supplying the demanded balance of material characteristics. The main level was the introduction of an opportunity catalyst, thanks to which it became feasible to gain each the specified physical and mechanical properties – ring stiffness and effect resistance of pipes, and the stableness of the manufacturing procedure. The synergy of the formulation and the chosen catalyst opened up the opportunity of producing a competitive product that fully meets the necessities of the Russian market.”

Ruslan Khairullin, Director of the Engineering and Road Infrastructure Division, delivered: “Corrugated pipes play a main role in the substitute and construction of present day sewer and drainage structures, making sure reliability and a long service life. We are confident that the use of the domestic brand will make a significant contribution to the implementation of the tasks of the national venture “Infrastructure for Life”, facilitating the accelerated modernization of utility networks in Russian cities.”
