German speciality chemicals company, Lanxess, is decreasing the carbon footprint of benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate, all of that are produced at its Botlek site (Netherlands) and broadly used in personal care, home care, food, beverages and pet food products.

These products are now manufactured absolutely with low-emission electricity. Lanxess stated it is dispensing with fossil fuels, thereby prosing to the decarbonization of the downstream value chain.

Mr. Michael Zobel, head of the Lanxess Flavors & Fragrances commercial unit, explains: “Our clients are underneath growing pressure to enhance their carbon footprint. With low-emission manufacturing in Botlek, we allow them to use CO₂-optimized solutions – without compromising at the quality or availability of our products.”

Lanxess has already transformed the energy supply at numerous manufacturing sites to emission-free or sustainable sources. For example, the energy for the Krefeld-Uerdingen site comes from renewable assets, while in Nagda (India), electricity and mostly produced from biomass. These measures decrease the corporation’s own Scope 2 emissions.

The corporation displayed that all manufacturing sites in its Flavors & Fragrances business unit are licensed to ISCC PLUS. The certification guarantees transparency regarding the using sustainable raw materials along the entire value chain.

Since the start of 2024, the Flavors & Fragrances business unit has also been providing variants of all products in its portfolio under the “Scopeblue” sustainability label. This label identifies products that either includes at least 50% sustainable raw materials or have a carbon footprint that is at least 50% decrease than that of conventional products.
