European Commission bans bisphenol A in food packaging

The European Commission will pass ahead with a ban on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact material, consisting of metal cans and plastic bottles

Announced on 19 December 2024, the ban follows a public consultation and good vote by EU member states in advance in the year, which was observed by a scrutiny duration by the Council and the European Parliament. The ban also considers the latest scientific evaluation from the European Food Safety Authority that concluded that BPA had potentially dangerous results on the immune system.

BPA is utilized in the whole lot from plastic and metal food packing containers to reusable water bottles and drinking water pipes. It is already banned within the EU in infant bottles and comparable merchandise.

Oliver Várhelyi, commissioner for health and animal welfare, stated maintaining high food protection requirements in the EU and protecting citizens became one of the Commission’s ‘highest priorities’. ‘Today’s ban, that is primarily based on solid scientific recommendation, will protect our customers towards harmful chemical compounds wherein they can come into contact with their foods and drinks,’ he delivered.

For most products, there can be an 18 month segment out duration to allow industry time to evolve and keep away from disruption in the food chain. The ban additionally includes different bisphenols which can be harmful to the reproductive and endocrine systems.
