BASF has formally launched the world’s first industrial-scale manufacturing plant for X3D technology-based catalysts at its Ludwigshafen site. This step notes a considerable step for additive production in the chemical industry, permitting BASF to mass-manufacture these innovative catalyst solutions and solidify its position as a market leader.

Utilizing X3D technology, advanced catalysts are manufactures with optimized, open-structure geometries that emerge high mechanical stability with superior performance. These custom-designed catalysts considerably lessen reactor pressure drop even as rising active surface area, permitting higher throughput, improved product quality, and considerably decrease energy consumption as compared to conventional catalysts,

BASF has been supplying X3D catalysts to manufacturing plants for numerous internal and external clients for decades. The technology is exceptionally capable and can be implemented to a wide range of catalyst material, consisting of precious and base metal catalysts as well as numerous support materials. The latest manufacturing plant in Ludwigshafen gives the foundation for making this technology more extensively available and for further reducing development and market introduction timelines.

In 2025, the Chinese-based fine chemical corporation An Hui Jintung filled their manufacturing plant with BASF’s sulfuric acid catalysts O4-115 X3D. “The plant started up easily, and plant performance has drastically advanced compared to before. Manufacturing carried out a record high, generating substantial economic advantage for our corporation. We will continue our collaboration with BASF to sell catalyst upgrades and replacements across additional units,” stated Eter Zhu, General Manager at An Hui Jintung.

“We are pleased that X3D technology already offers our customers a real competitive edge: We can deliver catalysts tailored exactly to their precise chemical methods – rapidly and in large quantities. At the same time, we assist clients reach their target, as our catalysts permit them to accelerate manufacturing performance at the same time as improving the efficiency of the raw materials they use,” said Detlef Ruff, Senior Vice President Chemical Catalysts and Adsorbents at BASF. “I am really excited to look those groundbreaking innovations and honored to take at the responsibility for a business that serves as a key enabler of chemical reactions,” stated Yaqian Liu, who will be succeed Detlef Ruff as of April 1.
