BASF’s Intermediates division is increasing supply safety for European clients within the 1, 4-butanediol (BDO) value chain. By scaling up manufacturing at its Ludwigshafen plant in Germany, BASF is offering a strong, reliable deliver to support clients manage the effect of new BDO anti-dumping proceedings.

Using its highly incorporated Verbund structure throughout the whole acetylene value chain, BASF is growing BDO output to reinforce the provision of main derivatives, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF), and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). This incorporated setup secures deliver for crucial downstream markets—which include polymers, solvents, and high-overall performance materials—while ensuring strong manufacturing planning. Targeting on manufacturing in Ludwigshafen emphasizes BASF’s strategic commitment to the European BDO market and pursuits to strengthen the long-term outlook for both the corporation and its clients.

“In an environment of shifting global markets and expanding regionalization, strong and dependable local manufacturing capabilities are becoming rising crucial for our downstream industries,” describes Verena Siegel, Vice President Global Business Management for Butanediol and Derivatives in BASF’s Intermediates division.

In line with its sustainability method, BASF maintains to extend its portfolio of more sustainable products, which consist, for instance, biomass balanced (BMB) versions of BDO, THF and PolyTHF that keep fossil resources and reduce Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs).

“Producing more BDO in Ludwigshafen permits us to minimize transport requirements and draw on the efficiencies of our incorporated Verbund, resulting in a reduced PCF,” describes Sebastian Spicher, Senior Product Manager for Acetylene and Butanediol. “At the same time, we’re advancing new solutions that make use of renewable electricity and renewable raw materials.” These measures support enhance lifecycle performance across BDO derivatives and underline BASF’s commitment to driving more sustainable value chains.

BDO is a main intermediate used throughout several downstream markets, including polymers, textiles, automotive engineering, pharmaceuticals and consumer items. BASF is one of the global leaders in BDO and its derivatives, operating two BDO manufacturing plants in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Geismar, Louisiana.
