Hyundai, IOC to explore viability of mass-use of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

The enterprise has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IOC, under which it has passed over one Hyundai Nexo hydrogen gas cell electric vehicle (FCEV) to IOC for accomplishing real-world tests on Indian roads, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) stated in a statement.

During the 2-year trial duration, HMIL and IOC will compare durability and operational reliability over an anticipated distance of 40,000-kms, it added.

A Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) evaluation, consisting of periodic maintenance, will also be carried out to offer essential insights into the long-term economic and environmental advantages of adopting hydrogen-powered vehicles for the Indian market, the enterprise said.

HMIL’s Managing Director Mr. Unsoo Kim stated by the IOC partnership, the enterprise objectives to mix world-class hydrogen fuel cell technology with Indian expertise.

“Together, we seek for to unlock the capacity of green hydrogen as a transformative energy source making it accessible, less affordable, and sustainable. We are confident this collaboration will serve a critical step in demonstrating the ability of hydrogen as an option sustainable fuel source in the times to come,” he added.

IOC’s Director (R&D) and Board Member Mr. Alok Sharma commented, “We believe with Hydrogen fuel is a crucial thing of India’s clean energy roadmap, and fuel cell technology holds sizeable capacity in significantly aiding net carbon neutrality”.

HMIL stated as part of its holistic hydrogen mobility goals, it’s also executing a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IITM) for developing a ‘Hydrogen Innovation Centre’ offering a platform for startups and OEMs to test their components and quality.
