PetroChem Summit 2024: Smart tech for smarter operation

Experts talk about the function of AI, ML, and IoT in driving efficiency and predictive renovation

Amid growing needs for efficiency and sustainability, the combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT) is proving to be a game-changer, driving extraordinary advancements in operational efficiencies and prophetic maintenance. These technology are the important thing to staying beforehand, making sure that petrochemical operations are not productive and dependable however additionally flexible and future-prepared.

In this context, the leading specialists from petrochemical industry shared the latest developments at the second session of second edition of PetroChem Summit 2024 titled ‘Applications of AI, ML, and IoT for enhancing Operational Efficiencies and prophetic Maintenance’ prepared through the Indian Chemical News in New Delhi on December 18, 2024.

Manish Grover, Former Executive Director (Strategic IS & IS), IOCL moderated the panel discussion. Outlining the importance of enforcing smart technologies, Grover said, “As we navigate this enterprise 4.0, the petrochemical industry is uniquely located to harness the convert power of AI, ML and IoT. These technologies are not best redesigning the conventional manufacturing examples however also placing new benchmarks for operational excellence, efficiency, and predictive protection; and safety and sustainability.”

Vimal Goel, Head – IT, HPCL Mittal Energy Limited stated, “It is from time to time difficult for the IT person to persuade the refineries and petrochemical engineers approximately using data and digital technologies as they are confident about the excellent results from current set up. You should supply them a use case to reveal that the output of the system is a much better than what they had been doing earlier.

“For example, we have got a CPP 165 megawatt captive power generation plant that runs on pet coke. There have been troubles. Every day there has been a deviation of 6-7 times in the SOx levels. Using the classical AI-ML, we have been able to grow a model which was capable of anticipate 30 minutes earlier what’s going to the SOx stage. To control the Sulfur oxides (SOx) emission stage, the operator uses the lime and as a result adjusts the dosing of the lime. Since the operator might not have the consent, we produced this application in a controlled loop. basing at the reactivity and quality of lime, AI-ML adjusts the stages of dosing. In this exercise, we answered the three problems.

“One is the assurance that it can clear up the problem. Second is that the departure in the SOx turned into zero, and third is that we used the lime and therefore saved around Rs 20 crore. This is the power of information and the advantages it comes with. While the oil and gas industry has had the equal set of merchandise in the ultimate 150 years, the petrochemical industry relatively has numerous complications. There we are using the AI-ML to try to enhance the steam intake.”

Gaurav Vyas, Lead Strategy-Director’s office/AVP, RIL stated, “Data was always there but now how we are harnessing the producing records incorporates a strategic importance. Not most effective is this bringing flexibility in choice making however additionally a change in how we incorporate the deliver chain with production. It also facilitates to identify the bottlenecks impacting the deliver chain impact and vice versa.

“For instance, within the polyester business, the PTA was normally sourced from China and we explored through the data analytic whether or not it became possible for us to manufacture it ourselves. However, based on the value of manufacturing and other factors, we terminated that it is cautious to buy it rather than producing it. We harnessed the data and consequently highlighted the strategic use of data.

“Most companies determined out that most of the accidents occur close to the crane location and the tanker where there has been a fire due to power. The CEO determined that the complete enterprise must undergo the training on static electricity. However, as opposed to that it ought to have been the driver who should were given training. Similarly for crane, the maintenance crew and crane operator need to be trained. A governance and mindset trade is important. In phrases of transition, the exchange management has to increase a culture as with information we have to demonstrate the advantages observed by scaling up.

“We ought to create a digital dashboard wherein we know the users and we track the usage. We should not generate just a digital dodo that prevents operating as soon as the management turns the eye away. The duplication have to be averted as it will bog down the complete system and due to the fact we don’t have a single supply of truth.”

Anamika, DGM – ERP (Digital Applications), HPCL stated, “We beginning the digital transition across the year 2018 with the Project Parikalp. In the starting we thought of demand predicting as we are a downstream enterprise. It did wonders as we have been able to are expecting the demand with 95% accuracy.

“After that we beginning many more digital initiatives. In case we are not able to market our solution or reach the organizations, they either don’t use it or we start shadow use. The basic things is that if we are in a data driven way of life we have to reach the humans and show them what type of insights they may be getting for the growth. We used predictive maintenance for maximum of the gadget in our refinery.

“Currently the second level is within the development however in the starting there have been questions about how may want to it higher the operations. It took 7-8 months to convince the refinery crew for adopting AI-ML solutions. The gadgets could be very expensive and we had to persuade the committees about saving renovation. For demand forecasting, we did a POC and have been capable of provide 98% accuracy.

“Being first digital execution, management gave us a massive budget however the seller quoted double the budget that was allocated to us. It took us a month to calculate the advantages a good way to come. In phrases of Generative AI, we commenced the use of it in November 2022, initially with in house GPT. After a hit demonstration, we are now scaling it up.”

The PetroChem Summit 2024 themed ‘Identifying New Opportunities For Value Creation’ become supported through the industry associations inclusive of Alkali Manufacturers Association Of India (AMAI) and Chemicals & Petrochemicals Manufacturers’ Association (CPMA). The Platinum Sponsor turned into Somaiya Vidyavihar University and Gold Sponsor, Tubacex Group.
