GHCL gets environmental clearance for soda ash venture in Kutch, Gujarat

GHCL Ltd., amongst the greatest soda ash and industrial salt-makers in India, has introduced receipt of environmental clearance for its soda ash greenfield venture in Kutch, Gujarat

According to a inventory exchange filing by the enterprise, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change admitted the clearance on December 12, 2024.

The enterprise plans to construct the one million tonne of soda ash plant in two levels over a six-year duration. In the first level, the potential addition could be 0.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) related to funding of around Rs. 4,500 crore; whilst second level will see an addition of another 0.5 mtpa at Rs. 2,500 crore.

The enterprise will be nearly boosting its manufacturing capacities focused on a 30% market share in India. The enterprise’s present soda ash production facility at Sutrapada, also in Gujarat, stands at 1.2 mtpa.

Soda ash is utilized in a extensive variety of industries like glass production, detergents & soaps, rechargeable batteries, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. According to GHCL, India will witness a soda ash demand of around 7-mtpa. presently, India manufactures 3.6 mtpa of soda ash which is merely 6% of the worldwide soda ash production capability.

 

Salt Field

GHCL is also said to be planning an funding of Rs. 350 crore for setting up a salt field in Kutch. The Zara Zumara Salt Field might be mounted in the Jara region of Kutch. The enterprise is said to have collected a land parcel of 6,500 hectares for the venture.

presently, GHCL has a salt potential of about 8-10 lakh tonnes. Speaking during the eterprise’s Q2 result earning call, Mr. R. S. Jalan, Managing Director, GHCL, stated that around 20 lakh tonnes of salt may be comprised of the newly obtained land parcel. The salt field is possibly to take approximately 3 years to come to be operational. This will serve the captive demand of salt for GHCL’s soda ash plant in Sutrapada and the proposed greenfield plant in Kutch, Gujarat.
