BASF will stop running various manufacturing lines at its McIntosh, Alabama plant by spring 2027.

A chemical producer is cutting back operations at one of its south Alabama facilities, a move that will impact numerous jobs, as per to a notice filed with the state.

BASF Corporation verified with AL.com that the New Jersey-based company will stop running multiple manufacturing lines at its McIntosh, Alabama facility by the spring of 2027. Around 80 employees will lose their jobs, per a WARN notice posted online this week.

The site recently produces specialty chemicals marketed by BASF’s Performance Chemicals division, serving the plastics and automotive industries. The McIntosh site will persist to operate at a reduced footprint.

Alyson Bartol, BASF spokesperson, stated in an email to AL.com that the company is working to help employees impacted via layoffs.

“In spite of sustained efforts to improve manufacturing efficiency over the time, the McIntosh site persist to face a relatively high-cost role relative to other BASF assets and industry peers,” Bartol stated. “Wider market developments, such as growing commoditization and persisted margin pressure, have added to the challenges at the site, restricting the long-term viability of profitable manufacturing.”

BASF Corporation also has production operations in Theodore and Huntsville, which are unaffected by these layoffs, the company verified.

McIntosh is a small town of approximately 300 residents in Washington County, in south Alabama. The news of the manufacturing line cuts first surfaced in May, while the company informed WKRG. But those layoffs didn’t appear in public WARN notices filed with the state until now.

Federal law needs large employers to file a public WARN notice with the state in advance of mass layoffs or plant closures. Those WARN notices are posted by the Alabama Department of Workforce.

The anticipated job cuts bring Alabama’s tally of employees impacted by mass layoffs and closures to more than 1,900 to far in 2026.
