ABB and Citroniq partner to build world’s first 100% bio-based polypropylene facility in US

ABB has went into a landmark supply agreement with Citroniq Chemicals to supply superior automation, electrification, and digitalization solutions for the world’s first industrial-scale, a 100% bio-based polypropylene facility in Nebraska, USA. This cutting-edge venture marks a big step forward to decarbonizing one of the toughest-to-abate industrial sectors.

Polypropylene is a flexible material utilized in countless everyday products, along with food and beverage packaging, automotive parts, medical gadgets, and client goods. Citroniq’s facility, scheduled to start operations in 2029, will provide absolutely certified biogenic polypropylene sourced from America corn-based ethanol industry, providing a sustainable option to conventional, fossil-based plastics.

At complete ability, Citroniq’s planned 3-facility platform ought to decrease domestic polypropylene-associated emissions by 20%, eternally taking up to 3 million tons of CO₂ yearly in solid pellets.

“Our collaboration with ABB is a important step closer to construct a world-class, progressive production facility which could change the plastics industry,” stated Mel Badheka, President and Co-Founder of Citroniq Chemicals. “ABB’s proven expertise in automation and digitalization is crucial for a venture of this scale and complexity.”

Upon final investment decision, ABB will offer its ABB Ability ™ System 800xA distributed control device, superior technique control, digital simulation technologies, electric device, instrumentation, and engineering services.
