EU sees 13% drop in chemical manufacturing, 14% in consumption

In 2023, the EU manufactured a total of 218 million tonnes of commercial chemicals (safe or unsafe) and consumed 227 million tonnes, indicating a 13% decrease in manufacturing and 14% decrease in consumption compared with 2022.

This information comes from facts launched by Eurostat. The article offers a handful of findings from the greater specified Statistics Explained article on chemical manufacturing and consumption.

In 2023, 167 million tonnes of chemicals risky to health have been produced within the EU, a drop of 11% as compared with 2022. Production of chemicals risky to the environment decreased by 4%, reaching 68 million tonnes. These 2 sub classes of risky chemical overlay.

The consumption of risky chemicals also lowered in 2023. A total of 167 million tonnes of chemicals risky to health were used, a 14% lower as compared with 2022. The consumption of chemical compounds risky to the environment got down by using 12% and totaled 57 million tonnes.

Looking back, both manufacturing and consumption of safe and unsafe chemical compounds extended between 2004 and 2007, before a drop during the economic crisis in 2008 and 2009. After a rebound in 2010, chemicals manufacturing and consumption remained stable till 2020, and got lesser during the last 3 years.
